This is a slightly different take on the good idea concept, but it’s one I feel very strongly about. I’m not sure if this is a local phenomenon or if it happens everywhere, you tell me.
Every time a new strip mall opens around where I live, the very first shop that opens is inevitably either a cleaners or a nail salon. Every time! This is no joke. What’s the deal with those businesses and why do we need so many of them? Around my home, in a half mile radius, I recently counted 12 cleaners. Do people really have that many clothes that need to be laundered or dry cleaned?
And nail salons? Can there be that many people who need their nails done that we need one on every block? What’s worse, I’ve been in one or two with my wife and/or daughter and they’re usually empty. They’ll have 10 very expensive looking foot care chairs lined up on the wall along with 10 more nail care stations, but only two or three people working and no customers.
Yep, the dollar is down, gas prices are high, the real estate market is in the tank, but if you’re a cleaner or nail “technician” things are looking up – they’re always looking up. They must be the eternal optimists.
If you’re looking for a comical idea for a quirky TV show or scene for a movie, this is one for the taking.

The people of your town are simultaneously dirty with unkempt nails. The demand for cleaners and nail salons is sky high.
No, I’m just kidding of course. Seriously, those aren’t bad things to have open on a regular basis. Many towns have the same problem, albeit with crack-houses, so count yourself lucky.
I agree that it’s not a bad thing to have a reasonable number around. But I’m absolutely not kidding when I say that every single strip mall that gets built has one or the other as the first tenant. Maybe it’s a front operation for a Triad, or there’s indentured servitude going on. It’s very hard for me to believe that there’s enough business to support them all. Who knows though.
[...] America is littered with stripmalls that are half empty, other than the standard nail salons and cleaners. I’d love to be able to hop into my car for an ocassional 5 minute commute to a nearby [...]
